Celebrate the arrival of the fall season and the new harvest moon during Schuler’s Restaurant & Pub’s Harvest Moonshine Tasting on Monday, October. 12 at 6pm. Enjoy an evening of sampling various white whiskey cocktails paired with autumn small-plate appetizers prepared by Chef Renee Hogge.
Josh Cook and Jon Good from the soon-to-open Green Door Distillery in Kalamazoo will share insights into the history and methods of producing moonshine, while also providing information about Michigan’s active craft spirit industry. Green Door Distillery is one of several “in-planning” members of the Michigan Craft Distillers Association—which represents nearly 20 unique distilleries in the state.
Dating back some 300 years—with roots deep in the Appalachian woods—the term “moonshine” refers to illegally-produced, high-proof, unaged, eye-watering white whiskey distilled from corn mash, sold in mason jars under the table in the dead of night to avoid detection by authorities. It is said that NASCAR grew out of prohibition-era moonshine bootleggers who would drive modified cars on winding country roads to race each other and escape the police.
Improvements in federal standards and distilling practices have brought moonshine out of the shadows and into the hands of thirsty consumers as one of the more intriguing beverages on the craft liquor scene.
The Harvest Moonshine Tasting begins with a Cranberry Moon Sparkler, followed by a sample of straight moonshine. The first course includes lobster tots served on a bed of saffron aioli with olive oil dressed arugula served with a Stump Sour. The second course features butternut squash ravioli with roasted garlic cream sauce and a crispy kale garnished, served with a Dirty Shirley. The third course offers smoked pork shoulder braised with collard greens, served on cornmeal Johnnycake with dried fruit chutney paired with Mama’s Peach Tea. The dinner ends with a spicecake cupcake with cream cheese frosting paired with Apple of My Pie.
Other Moonshine cocktails available when dining at Schuler’s Restaurant and Pub include Moon Island Iced Tea, Grown-Up Shirley Temple, Moon Mary, Moontini’s and Chocolate Covered Cherry. Or, sample the straight Moonshine, Cherry, Peach, Blackberry or Apple Pie straight or on the rocks.
